Dianne Joan Whittington

Born in Savannah on August 19, 1948, Dianne Joan Whittington passed away May 19, 2017, in Chattanooga, TN, her home for the past 38 years.  Daughter of the late James Eugene Whittington and the late Lillian Elizabeth Drewry Whittington, Ms. Whittington is survived by 3 sisters: Jean Frentz Rice (Paul), Gail Whittington Rose, and Angela Whittington Wilkerson (Tom); 3 nieces: Mary Elizabeth Frentz, Laura Rose Murillo, and Amanda Wilkerson Lawrence (Tom); 5 nephews: Steven Rose, David Rose, Derrick Rose(Jennifer),  James Frentz, and Christopher Wilkerson (Anne); numerous great nieces and nephews; her fiancé Jimmy Lee Roes; long-time friend Sharon Jones; her devoted house parent/caregiver Gail Francis (wife of the late Jeff Francis); and the Francis family’s children and grandchildren.

A 1968 graduate of Richard Arnold High School, Ms. Whittington attended Isle of Hope United Methodist Church in her youth. She moved to Chattanooga in 1978 to become a resident at Orange Grove Center.  She worked many jobs in the community and was a sorter in the recycling center at OGC until her retirement in 2016.  She was an award-winning Special Olympics athlete in swimming, running, and bowling.  A founding member of Team Duncan, she was an avid walker in the annual March of Dimes March for Babies.  As a member of Church of the Highlands, Ms. Whittington actively participated in Helping Hands and enjoyed serving in the nursery.  Caring for babies and young children was one of her special gifts.  A memorial service at her church is being planned.

The family will receive visitors at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel in Savannah from 6-8 p.m., Friday evening, May 26.  A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 27 at Hillcrest Abby Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Ms. Whittington's memory to Orange Grove Center, Inc., 615 Derby Street, Chattanooga, TN 37404.

Dianne sounds so productive with her jobs, sports, and special talents of caring for the very young at her church. You will miss her loving spirit. I am the granddaughter of Charlie Rob and Lillian Harris Willis. I was grieved to read of Diane's death in the Chattanooga newspaper. I am sending the information to Betty Willis Cook and other Willis relatives. Our sympathy goes out to all the family. Diane evidently was very happy at Orange Grove and had many opportunities to develop skills and friendships that enriched her life. Orange Grove does a wonderful job of meeting hne needs of special children, youth, and adults.
